Relocated Snakes Disoriented, Struggle to Survive in New Territories
Times of India · environment
Australian researchers have found that snakes moved from urban areas to reserves are becoming disoriented and struggling to survive. The Canberra Snake Tracking Project, initiated in 2021, monitors relocated and resident snakes, revealing that moved snakes exhibit erratic movements, face increased risks from predators and roads, and lose body condition. One tracked snake travelled five kilometres over 100 days to return to its original area. These findings challenge the assumption that snakes adapt quickly to new environments, highlighting significant survival challenges.
