India's Infrastructure Faces Huge Costs From Corrosion Due To Material Choices

Hindustan Times · business

India's infrastructure development is significantly impacted by corrosion, stemming from initial material choices rather than just maintenance issues. Decisions made at the drawing board, such as opting for cheaper materials or overlooking environmental wear, lead to escalating long-term costs. Corrosion costs India approximately ₹14.15 lakh crore annually, with infrastructure alone accounting for ₹1.42 lakh crore. Experts suggest nearly ₹49,580 crore of these infrastructure losses could be avoided through better corrosion management. The focus needs to shift from upfront construction costs to the total cost of ownership and asset lifespan.
