Dhanteras is not just about buying gold and utensils; it involves a significant tradition of lighting a lamp for Yamraj, the god of death. This ritual, known as Yam Deepdan, is believed to protect family members from untimely death and ensure their well-being. The lamp should be lit in the evening, placed outside the main entrance, facing the south, which is considered Yamraj's direction. A four-wicked lamp made of flour or clay, filled with mustard or sesame oil, should be used.
