Ladakh's Barren Land Yields Saffron, Collecting 22g in First Four Days
The Better India · lifestyle
An experimental initiative in Ladakh's Leh region has successfully cultivated saffron on previously barren land. Saffron flowers bloomed in under 30 days, significantly faster than the usual two-month period. The project, launched under Project Him Sarovar, planted approximately 90,000 Iranian saffron corms across 4,000 square metres. In the first four days of harvest, 22 grams of pure saffron were collected, with daily yields averaging 20 to 25 flowers. This experiment offers potential for high-value crop cultivation and new income streams for the region.
