India to Modify Labour Survey to Include Gig Economy and Unpaid Household Workers

The Hindu - Business · business

The Union government plans to redesign the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) to better capture data on digital platform workers and unpaid household labour. Modifications to the survey's design and structure will introduce additional questions to measure labour underutilisation. The National Sample Survey Office has proposed these changes, set to begin in January 2027, with a separate stratum to identify households with digital platform workers. This initiative aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the evolving labour market, including significant contributions from women in unpaid caregiving and household activities.
