Amazon Loses 240 Million Acres of Primary Forest, Threatening Rainfall

Times of India - India · india

A new report reveals that the Amazon has lost approximately 240 million acres of primary forest, an area comparable to Texas and California combined. This deforestation, largely driven by land clearing and fires, has significantly disrupted moisture-carrying routes, particularly during dry and transition seasons. The Amazon Conservation's MAAP program found that 15% of the basin's original forest is now gone, with Brazil accounting for nearly 80% of the total loss. This escalating loss brings the vital ecosystem closer to a critical tipping point, potentially impacting rainfall across the continent.
