16 House Sparrows Released in Brooklyn in 1851

In 1851, sixteen house sparrows were released in Brooklyn, New York, reportedly to combat caterpillars eating linden moths and save basswood trees. A 2010 study suggests these initial 16 birds, imported from England, were sufficient to establish the species. The birds thrived due to abundant food sources like spilled grain and horse manure. Within fifty years, house sparrows spread across the continental United States, becoming one of the world's most widely distributed birds.
