Calcutta HC Seeks Report From SEC on EVM, VVPAT Machine Shortage Ahead of Elections

The Calcutta High Court has requested a detailed report from the State Election Commission regarding a shortage of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines. This comes ahead of elections in seven key civic bodies. The court also inquired about the feasibility and legality of storing polling data separately on hard disks. Previously, the court had directed the preservation of EVMs, but the SEC sought a modification of this order to proceed with election preparations.

कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट ने सात प्रमुख नागरिक निकायों में चुनावों से पहले इलेक्ट्रॉनिक वोटिंग मशीन (ईवीएम) और वोटर वेरिफिएबल पेपर ऑडिट ट्रेल (वीवीपैट) मशीनों की कमी के संबंध में राज्य चुनाव आयोग से विस्तृत रिपोर्ट मांगी है। अदालत ने हार्ड डिस्क पर अलग से मतदान डेटा संग्रहीत करने की व्यवहार्यता और वैधता के बारे में भी पूछताछ की। पहले, अदालत ने ईवीएम को संरक्षित करने का निर्देश दिया था, लेकिन राज्य चुनाव आयोग ने चुनाव तैयारियों के साथ आगे बढ़ने के लिए इस आदेश में संशोधन की मांग की थी।
