Seven Candidates Vie For UN Chief Position

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will step down on December 31, concluding his second five-year term. His successor will be the UN's 10th secretary-general, beginning a five-year term on January 1, 2027. Seven candidates are currently in the race, with representatives from Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Senegal, and Uganda. The UN Security Council has conducted informal straw polls to narrow down the choices before a formal recommendation to the General Assembly.
