Maize Demand Surges as Ethanol Production Shifts from Sugar

Hindustan Times - Business · business

India's ethanol industry faces increased competition for maize as government curbs on sugar-based ethanol production shift focus to grains. Oil marketing companies are seeking 11 billion litres of ethanol for the November 2026-October 2027 supply year, primarily from maize. This move is expected to intensify demand from poultry, dairy, and starch industries, potentially raising prices for eggs and milk. Poor rainfall may further tighten maize supplies, exacerbating the competition. While rice and damaged foodgrains can partially meet requirements, a significant gap remains.
