India's draft National Steel Policy, set for public consultation soon, aims for over 600 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity and 500 million tonnes of consumption by 2047. The policy will replace the 2017 version and incorporate advancements like AI and decarbonisation. A ₹5,000 crore scheme is proposed for small steel producers, linking incentives to reduced carbon emissions. Measures to discourage cheap steel imports and boost speciality steel production are also included, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic industry.
