UP BJP Faces Core Vote Bank Tension Over UGC Rules

Aaj Tak · politics

The BJP in Uttar Pradesh is facing a dilemma regarding the UGC's 'Equity/Caste Based Discrimination Rules', which could alienate its core upper-caste vote bank ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. Recent by-election results in Agra, Varanasi, and Lucknow showed dissatisfaction among upper castes. The party fears alienating 17-18% of upper-caste voters if it supports the rules, but opposing them could impact non-Yadav OBC and Dalit votes. To address this, the BJP and RSS have launched a 'Chhatra Samvad' strategy to counter misinformation and engage with students and various community groups.
