SBI Chief Predicts 50bps Interest Rate Hike in December

State Bank of India Chairman C S Setty anticipates a 50 basis point increase in interest rates by December. While higher rates may impact discretionary consumption credit demand, Setty believes overall credit growth will remain strong, projecting a 7.1% economic growth forecast. He clarified that while some individual borrowers might face stress, credit for productive activities is unlikely to be significantly impacted. Setty also noted a structural shift in household savings with improved asset allocation and expects sufficient liquidity to prevent rate-driven competition for deposits.
