Supreme Court Allows OBC Federation to Approach Census Commissioner on Caste Menu

The Supreme Court has granted the OBC Federation of India permission to approach the Registrar General and Census Commissioner with their plea for a pre-loaded drop-down menu of recognised Other Backward Classes (OBC) for Census 2027. The federation argues that manual entry of caste details in the current census format leads to inaccuracies, citing issues from the 2011 Socio-Economic and Caste Census. The court noted that addressing this requires policy-making and disposed of the petition, directing authorities to consider it as a representation.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने ओबीसी फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडिया को रजिस्ट्रार जनरल और जनगणना आयुक्त से 2027 की जनगणना के लिए मान्यता प्राप्त अन्य पिछड़ा वर्ग (ओबीसी) के प्री-लोडेड ड्रॉप-डाउन मेनू के लिए अपनी याचिका के साथ संपर्क करने की अनुमति दी है। फेडरेशन का तर्क है कि वर्तमान जनगणना प्रारूप में जाति विवरण की मैन्युअल प्रविष्टि से अशुद्धियाँ होती हैं, और उन्होंने 2011 की सामाजिक-आर्थिक और जाति जनगणना से समस्याओं का हवाला दिया। अदालत ने कहा कि इसे संबोधित करने के लिए नीति-निर्माण की आवश्यकता है और याचिका का निपटारा करते हुए अधिकारियों को इसे एक प्रतिनिधित्व के रूप में मानने का निर्देश दिया।
