Kothamangalam NH Bypass Realignment Sparks Outrage Among Landowners

Protests have erupted in Kothamangalam over the third alignment change for the National Highway 85 bypass. Landowners, who had prepared for acquisition based on earlier notices, accuse the NHAI of increasing project costs with the new route. The bypass, stalled for over four decades, was previously revised to lower costs. Residents have been in financial limbo for three years, unable to sell, construct, or mortgage their properties. The latest shift reportedly increases project costs by Rs 100 crore and moves the route into municipal areas.

नेशनल हाईवे 85 बाईपास के तीसरे अलाइनमेंट में बदलाव को लेकर कोठामंगलम में विरोध प्रदर्शन शुरू हो गया है। जमीन मालिकों का आरोप है कि NHAI ने नए रूट से परियोजना की लागत बढ़ा दी है, जबकि वे पहले के नोटिसों के आधार पर अधिग्रहण के लिए तैयार थे। चार दशकों से अधिक समय से रुका हुआ बाईपास पहले लागत कम करने के लिए संशोधित किया गया था। निवासी तीन साल से वित्तीय अनिश्चितता में जी रहे हैं, अपनी संपत्तियों को बेचने, निर्माण करने या गिरवी रखने में असमर्थ हैं। नवीनतम बदलाव से कथित तौर पर परियोजना की लागत 100 करोड़ रुपये बढ़ जाएगी और रूट नगरपालिका क्षेत्रों में चला जाएगा।
