UGC new anti-discrimination rules, notified in January 2026, have been put on hold by the Supreme Court just 16 days after their implementation. The rules, intended to prevent caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions, faced opposition from general category organizations who argued the definition of discrimination was too narrow. Conversely, Dalit and OBC groups expressed concern that halting the rules could weaken protections against campus discrimination. The government is now considering forming a committee to review the regulations.
