Last 18 Black-Footed Ferrets Captured in 1986; Over 2,600 Now Returned to Wild

Hindustan Times · environment

The black-footed ferret, once thought extinct, began its recovery in 1986 when the last 18 known wild individuals were captured due to disease and habitat loss. These ferrets, descendants of a critically small founder population, formed the basis of a successful breeding program. Conservation efforts have since led to the birth of over 10,500 kits in human care. Reintroduction programs, enhanced by pre-release conditioning with prairie dogs, have returned more than 2,600 ferrets to North American grasslands, offering a significant conservation success story.
