RBI Governor Dismisses Fears of UPI Usage Drop Post MDR Implementation

A new MDR of 0.4% will be applied to certain UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000. This charge will only affect specific merchant transactions and not peer-to-peer transfers or all UPI payments. Customers will not incur any additional charges, as the MDR will be settled between payment system participants. Despite concerns that merchants might pass on costs or refuse online payments, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das believes this will not significantly impact UPI usage.
