Mortgage Hedging Adds Selling Pressure To US Treasury Market

Economic Times Markets · stocks

Rising long-term US Treasury yields have triggered mortgage-related hedging, intensifying selling pressure in the bond market. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields have surged approximately 130 basis points since late February, with 30-year yields up 100 basis points. This surge is attributed to oil price increases and expectations of multiple Federal Reserve rate hikes. The rise in yields has pushed 30-year mortgage rates to a nearly three-year high of 7.4%, discouraging refinancing and extending the expected life of mortgage-backed securities. Investors are hedging this increased exposure, amplifying bond market declines.
