Kerala's health department has issued a directive making generic names mandatory in all government doctor prescriptions. This move aims to address ongoing drug shortages in state-run hospitals and ensure patients receive timely treatment. Hospitals must now provide doctors with updated information on medicine availability to facilitate prescriptions based on stock. The directive also seeks to enable the identification of alternative medicines when specific brands are unavailable, amid concerns that patients are being forced to buy medicines externally.

केरल के स्वास्थ्य विभाग ने एक निर्देश जारी किया है जिसमें सरकारी डॉक्टरों के सभी पर्चों में जेनेरिक नामों को अनिवार्य कर दिया गया है। इस कदम का उद्देश्य राज्य द्वारा संचालित अस्पतालों में दवाओं की चल रही कमी को दूर करना और यह सुनिश्चित करना है कि मरीजों को समय पर इलाज मिले। अब अस्पतालों को डॉक्टरों को दवाओं की उपलब्धता के बारे में ताज़ा जानकारी देनी होगी ताकि स्टॉक के आधार पर पर्चे लिखे जा सकें। इस निर्देश का उद्देश्य यह भी है कि जब विशेष ब्रांड उपलब्ध न हों तो वैकल्पिक दवाओं की पहचान की जा सके, क्योंकि ऐसी चिंताएं हैं कि मरीजों को बाहर से दवाएं खरीदने के लिए मजबूर किया जा रहा है।
