The UN human rights office has expressed concern over mass detentions during recent large protests in Delhi, urging India to respect peaceful assembly rights and release arbitrarily detained individuals. India's Permanent Mission in Geneva rejected the remarks as misplaced and an unwarranted interference in its internal affairs. The protests, linked to the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party demanding electoral reforms, saw hundreds detained as authorities prevented them from reaching Jantar Mantar. India stated that citizens exercise assembly rights subject to reasonable restrictions and that legal avenues are available for grievances.
