Europe Likely Birthplace of Bats, New Study Suggests
Times of India · science
A new study analyzing 103 bat genomes and 44 fossils suggests Europe is the likely birthplace of bats, challenging previous theories. Researchers from the Bat1K consortium combined genetic data with fossil evidence to reconstruct bat evolutionary history. Their findings indicate bats most likely originated in Europe during the late Paleocene, approximately 65 million years ago. Descendants of this European ancestor are inferred to have dispersed to Africa and subsequently to other continents as modern bat groups diversified, offering a revised evolutionary timeline.
