EU Scrap Curbs May Raise Costs for Indian Metalmakers, Threaten MSMEs

Mint · business

Proposed European Union rules restricting metal scrap shipments to India could significantly disrupt supplies, potentially increasing production costs for Indian metalmakers. The restrictions, which could take effect from May 2027, are due to the EU's assessment that India has not demonstrated adequate environmental management of metal waste. This disruption may force Indian manufacturers, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to seek alternative, potentially more expensive, suppliers. India imports approximately 13 million tonnes of metal scrap annually, with Europe being a major source.
