Prehistoric rock paintings, potentially dating between 6000 BC and 2000 BC, have been documented in the Karikaiyur forests near Kotagiri in the Nilgiris. Anthropologist Reverend Philip Mulley is fascinated by these faded red and white figures, which resemble cave art found globally. Researchers have identified 662 paintings at the Karikaiyur site, depicting scenes of hunting, dancing, and animal husbandry. While experts believe these remote sites were used for ritualistic practices, further excavation is needed to accurately determine their age and understand the ancient cultures of the region.
