India Probes Pernod Ricard, Diageo Over Scotch Whisky Import Tariffs

Times of India · business

Indian tax authorities are investigating Pernod Ricard and Diageo for allegedly misclassifying bulk Scotch whisky imports to unfairly benefit from lower tariffs under the India-UK trade pact. The agreement, effective July 15, reduced tariffs on certain Scotch imports from 150% to 75%. However, tax inspectors reportedly believe the reduced duty does not apply to bulk concentrates. Pernod Ricard's offices were visited, and Diageo's Indian unit disclosed its offices were searched as part of an "industry-wide exercise." Both companies stated they are cooperating with authorities.
