Forest Dept Restores Elephant Passage, Clears Encroachment In Idukki
The Hindu · india
Forest department officials in Idukki's Devikulam range have reclaimed nearly 10 hectares of government land near Anayirankal, previously encroached for cardamom cultivation. The operation involved destroying illegal plantations and dismantling solar fencing and steel cables that obstructed a natural elephant passage. This action follows similar efforts last week to remove barriers blocking wildlife movement. Officials anticipate a reduction in human-elephant conflict as these traditional routes are reopened. However, the Cardamom Planters Federation alleges illegal fence removal from private lands and has lodged a complaint.
