Times of India · business
Delhi's Shangri-La Eros hotel has been fined Rs 1 lakh by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) for illegally adding a 10% service charge to food bills at its 'Mister Chai' restaurant. The CCPA ordered the restaurant to stop automatically collecting this charge by default. The authority found that customers were also being charged GST on the added service charge, despite the hotel claiming it was optional. The CCPA rejected the hotel's defence that customers could opt out, stating it amounted to an unfair trade practice.
