SBI Chairman Backs Minimal MDR on UPI Transactions to Fund Growth

Business Standard · business

State Bank of India Chairman CS Setty supports a minimal Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on select UPI transactions to help banks fund rising volumes and manage risks. He stated that India's UPI ecosystem needs sustained investment in infrastructure and fraud monitoring, with SBI alone handling nearly 400 million daily UPI transactions. Setty believes a minimal MDR, which would not affect 98% of transactions or P2P payments, is crucial for economic incentives to support necessary infrastructure. Safeguards are also proposed to prevent merchants from passing any charges onto consumers.
