RBI Governor: Surplus Liquidity Expected To Drain Within Current Financial Year

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that surplus liquidity in the banking system is unlikely to persist beyond the current financial year. He indicated that tools like currency leakage, sell-buy swaps, open market operations, and variable rate operations will absorb excess funds. While a cash reserve ratio hike remains a least preferred option, the central bank has not ruled it out. The immediate challenge is aligning the weighted average call rate with the repo rate amidst elevated liquidity.
