India's Law on Internet Shutdowns: Who Can Order, What's Required
Business Standard · india
Mobile internet was suspended near Delhi's Jantar Mantar ahead of a protest, bringing India's internet shutdown laws into focus. The Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024, govern these suspensions, replacing 2017 rules. Section 20(2)(b) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, allows central or state governments to order shutdowns for public emergency or safety. Orders must be written, specify reasons, affected areas, service types, and duration, and cannot exceed 15 days. A review committee examines compliance, and the Supreme Court has mandated public disclosure of such orders.
