Himalayan Glaciers Melting Rapidly, Threatening Water Supply & Causing Floods
Hindustan Times · environment
The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region, Asia's water tower, faces a critical threat as its glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate. This rapid wastage, particularly since 2000, raises concerns about future freshwater availability for hundreds of millions across Asia. While increased melt initially causes floods, long-term retreat will reduce water supply, leading to droughts. Furthermore, melting glaciers can form new lakes, increasing the risk of devastating glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), as tragically seen in Sikkim and Tibet-Nepal.
