Student Suicides: Counselling Crucial, Not Just Fans

Hindustan Times · education

Following recent student suicides at IIT Bombay and BIT Mesra, institutions are considering installing anti-suicide fans. This mirrors measures taken in Kota three years ago, where hostels mandated special fans and nets. Experts, however, argue that cosmetic changes like fans are insufficient, stressing the urgent need for sustained counselling and addressing the competitive nature of the education system. A nationwide survey revealed that approximately 15% of higher education students felt overwhelmed, with 9% experiencing suicidal thoughts in the past six months.
