A 14-acre private island near Key West, Florida, known as Ballast Key, has officially joined the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. The island, which was stewarded by David Wolkowsky since the early 1970s, hosted famous guests like playwright Tennessee Williams and author Truman Capote. This move finalizes a decades-long conservation effort, ensuring the last privately owned land within the refuge boundaries is protected from commercial development. Ballast Key is also a vital habitat for nesting birds and sea turtles.
