DW World · world

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has warned that ongoing disruptions to shipping in critical waterways like the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea, and Black Sea could lead to famine in the global south. He highlighted that attacks on shipping lanes, including those related to the Ukraine war and Houthi threats, prevent essential fertilizer from reaching agricultural production areas. Wadephul stated this disproportionately affects the world's poorest people who rely on basic provisions like wheat. He emphasized that global trade cannot be held hostage by such actions.
