The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, established in 2004 by Steve and Terri Irwin in a former packing shed, has treated over 136,000 animals by 2024. Initially a dream of Lyn Irwin, the hospital has grown into a major facility with advanced medical equipment, operating 24/7. It provides free care for native wildlife, seeing between 9,000 and 10,000 animals annually. Birds constitute the largest patient group at 43%, followed by possums and gliders, reptiles, and koalas, with car strikes being the most frequent cause of admission.
