Optometrist's Ice Cream Shops Create Jobs For People With Disabilities

Retired optometrist Robin Rinearson opened Jake's Ice Cream in Virginia in 2021 with the goal of creating meaningful employment for people with disabilities. Her initiative has since expanded to two businesses, Jake's Ice Cream and Jake's Gourmet Popcorn, employing a total of 35 individuals. The businesses have gained recognition for their inclusive hiring practices, with Rinearson reporting a waiting list of people eager to work there. The skills learned at the shops aim to foster independence and potentially lead to further employment opportunities for the staff.
