Karnataka Considers Law Against Hospitals Withholding Bodies Over Unpaid Bills

Hindustan Times · india

Karnataka is contemplating a new law to prevent private hospitals from withholding bodies of deceased patients due to outstanding medical bills. State health minister U T Khader stated that the proposed legislation aims to stop hospitals from making payment a prerequisite for releasing bodies, alleviating financial pressure on grieving families. The government plans to consult with hospital associations to refine the existing framework, which has reportedly not been implemented effectively. Existing rules from 2007 and 2018 already mandate the immediate handover of bodies, allowing hospitals to pursue dues legally.
