Mauritius Kestrel Saved From Extinction By Dedicated Conservation Efforts
Times of India - India · india
In 1974, the Mauritius kestrel faced extinction with only four individuals remaining, including a single breeding pair. Welsh conservationist Carl Jones led intensive efforts, employing captive breeding, monitoring, supplementary feeding, and nest protection. These combined techniques helped rebuild the population to approximately 600 individuals at its peak. Despite this remarkable recovery, the species remains endangered due to ongoing habitat threats, highlighting the long-term challenges of sustaining conservation success. The kestrel's near-extinction was caused by habitat destruction and pesticide use.
