Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 15-year-old player who represented India in the Asian Games, has been excluded from the playing XI for the first T20I against West Indies. Captain Shreyas Iyer opted for Punjab player Naman Dhir, who is also an off-spinner, to debut in the match. The decision to bench Suryavanshi was reportedly due to team combination adjustments needed for the Lucknow pitch conditions, which differ from those in Japan. Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep Singh also made their return to the team.
