Trout stocking wiped out frogs from 92% range

Trout stocking in Sierra Nevada lakes, initiated between 1870 and 1988 to boost angling, has led to the disappearance of mountain yellow-legged frogs from 92% of their historic range. The introduced trout preyed on frogs, their tadpoles, and essential insects. This ecological disruption, driven by a desire to enhance recreation, transformed fragile alpine ecosystems. Park managers are now working to remove nonnative fish and restore habitats for the frogs.
