India defeated New Zealand by five wickets in the first ODI, with captain Shubman Gill praising the team's bowling and fielding. Gill specifically highlighted Rohit Sharma's underarm throw that resulted in Daryl Mitchell's run out as a crucial turning point in the match. This dismissal broke a dangerous partnership between Mitchell and Glenn Phillips. Virat Kohli's unbeaten 74 guided India to victory after the target was revised to 143 in 32 overs due to rain. Earlier, the Indian pace trio restricted New Zealand to 185.
