Himachal Pradesh Tells NGT: Domestic Sewage Pollutes Markanda River

Times of India · environment

Himachal Pradesh has informed the National Green Tribunal that domestic sewage, not industrial waste, is the primary cause of pollution in the Markanda river. A report from Sirmaur district identified wastewater from commercial establishments and untreated sewage as major contributors, stemming from incomplete sewer connectivity and inadequate treatment facilities. While 85% of sewer connectivity in Kala Amb is complete, the remaining work is ongoing, with a target completion date of December 31, 2026. A dispute over maintenance costs has also delayed connections to the sewage treatment system.
