Japan Deputy Mayor Crushed To Death By Festival Float

A deputy mayor in western Japan, Akihiro Nabae, died after being crushed by a giant float during the annual Saijo festival. Nabae was participating in the procession on Saturday when he became trapped beneath the float, which reportedly weighs up to three tonnes. He was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead. The exact circumstances of the incident are under investigation. This tragedy follows two other reported deaths at separate festivals in western Osaka the previous Saturday, where floats toppled during high-speed turns.
