The Indian government has directed oil companies to cease purchasing ethanol derived from sugarcane juice and related products for the 2026-27 supply year. This decision aims to preserve domestic sugar supplies, which are facing renewed price pressures and weather-related production risks. The restriction, effective from November, will not apply to C-heavy molasses, a by-product with no recoverable sugar. This move comes as both domestic and global sugar prices rise due to concerns over crop yields and delayed operations, exacerbated by El Nino conditions.
