The Valmiki community, a significant segment within Uttar Pradesh's Dalit population, is emerging as a key political force ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. While often overshadowed by Jatav and Pasi communities, the Valmiki population, numbering around 13.2 lakh or nearly 1% of the state's total, constitutes about 5% of the Scheduled Caste population. They are known by various names like Bhangi and Mehtar in different regions. Their influence is particularly notable in urban and semi-urban areas of Western Uttar Pradesh, impacting dozens of assembly seats and local body elections.
