Ganesha Idol Waste Transformed Into Study Tables For Maharashtra Students
Times of India · environment
An innovative initiative in Maharashtra is transforming waste from Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesha idols into classroom furniture. The 'Visarjan Se Vidya Tak' project collects immersed idol fragments, processes them to remove contaminants, and recycles the PoP into durable study tables and benches. This pilot project, involving environmentalist Malhar Kaalambe and recycling expert Dr Binish Desai, successfully converted approximately 3,000 kg of PoP waste into 760 study tables for students in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation schools. The initiative aims to address both environmental waste and the shortage of educational infrastructure.
