Centre Asks Supreme Court To Halt Great Nicobar

The Union government has asked the Supreme Court to halt proceedings in petitions before the Calcutta High Court concerning the ₹92,000-crore Great Nicobar Island project. These petitions allege violations of the Forest Rights Act (FRA) in obtaining consent for the project. The Centre argues the petitioner lacks locus standi and challenges to the project are an abuse of process. The High Court had previously dismissed the Centre's objections, allowing a final hearing on the matter. The government asserts its duty to ensure national growth is not impeded by private claims.

केंद्र ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट से ग्रेट निकोबार रोकने को कहा

केंद्र सरकार ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट से कलकत्ता हाई कोर्ट में ₹92,000 करोड़ की ग्रेट निकोबार द्वीप परियोजना के संबंध में याचिकाओं पर कार्यवाही रोकने का आग्रह किया है। इन याचिकाओं में परियोजना के लिए सहमति प्राप्त करने में वन अधिकार अधिनियम (FRA) के उल्लंघन का आरोप लगाया गया है। केंद्र का तर्क है कि याचिकाकर्ता के पास उचित आधार नहीं है और परियोजना को चुनौती देना प्रक्रिया का दुरुपयोग है। हाई कोर्ट ने पहले केंद्र की आपत्तियों को खारिज कर दिया था, जिससे मामले की अंतिम सुनवाई की अनुमति मिल गई थी। सरकार का कहना है कि राष्ट्रीय विकास को निजी दावों से बाधित न होने देना उसका कर्तव्य है।
