He revealed in an interview that his first love was the Indian Army, and he believes cricket came into his life by chance. Gambhir attributes not joining the National Defence Academy to playing in a Ranji Trophy match during his 12th grade. Despite not achieving his initial career aspiration, he found immense success in cricket, leading India to ICC trophy victories and continuing his support for army martyrs' children through a foundation.

भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम के हेड कोच गौतम गंभीर हाल ही में 45 साल के हुए हैं। उन्होंने एक इंटरव्यू में बताया कि उनका पहला प्यार भारतीय सेना थी और उन्हें लगता है कि क्रिकेट उनकी ज़िंदगी में इत्तेफ़ाक़ से आया। गंभीर ने बताया कि 12वीं क्लास में रणजी ट्रॉफी का मैच खेलने की वजह से वो नेशनल डिफेंस एकेडमी में नहीं जा पाए। अपने पहले करियर के सपने को पूरा न कर पाने के बावजूद, उन्होंने क्रिकेट में ज़बरदस्त कामयाबी हासिल की, भारत को ICC ट्रॉफी जिताई और एक फाउंडेशन के ज़रिए सेना के शहीद बच्चों की मदद करना जारी रखा।
