India Faces Growing Overlap of Flood and Drought Vulnerabilities: IIT Roorkee Study
Business Standard · environment
A new study by IIT Roorkee reveals that many Indian districts are increasingly vulnerable to both floods and droughts simultaneously. By 2011, over one-fifth of districts were highly susceptible to floods, and nearly one-fifth to droughts. More than ten percent of districts showed high vulnerability to multiple hazards, with hotspots concentrated in eastern and northern India. States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal are particularly at risk for both extremes. The research emphasizes the need for integrated approaches to disaster preparedness and adaptation at a district level.
