BBC World · world

French authorities have imposed overnight curfews in parts of central Paris and other cities following widespread riots and looting. A curfew is in effect in Paris's Place de la République and Les Halles shopping area, with bans on unauthorised gatherings in other city centre locations. Similar partial curfews have been announced for cities like Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, and Lyon. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admitted police had "lost control" in some areas, as over 2,500 people have been arrested amid the unrest.
